It amazes me how fast the global information culture has
spread even over the last 5 years. In a
society that seeks to be connected yet still have personal space; it is evident
how the Internet, social networking, cell phones and digital imaging allow this
to happen. I still critique in my mind
how this is a really good thing and how it has effected live face-to-face
communication. I see this most
noticeable in some of my kids friends who I have conversations with that have a
hard time talking to me in person but can carry on a long conversation on Facebook
or via text message with me. I realize
some kids are shy (I have four of my own.) But I have noticed a difference in
the last few years especially. I also
notice within the church that people will air their grievances on Facebook
where a lot of people can read it instead of trying to work things out one on
one with someone or at least a smaller group of people. One of the benefits of social networking is
being able to notice if people are in need or hurting by what they post so that
as a body of believers, we can reach out to them. I love being able to communicate with a large
number of people quickly when there is an event or information they need to
receive without the cost and speed of snail mail or even email. As one who is responsible for assimilation at
the church I work at, I concur that a phone call to a new person at your church
can be intrusive and most of the time they do not answer their phone. I have found that an email is much more
effective and they will respond to it IF they want more information or have a
question. Some people even thank you for
the follow up.
