My thoughts on the last class session. 9/26/11
I appreciated Dr. Bolger not only going over the syllabus for MC 520 Church Planting class, but also sharing his experience and history of his successes and failures of church planting. His transparency to share his journey both in the church and in life in general create an environment that I believe will be conducive for each of the students to explore church planting in authentic and new avenues. I look forward to researching and discovering new ideas to embody the church outside of the “building” of the church. Being on staff of a church that has a missional focus, are we really impacting the world around us for the kingdom of heaven or are we still 80% focused on the Sunday celebration service? We call the big meeting a celebration service, but in reality how many of our attendees are relying on that to be their formational time? How can we make the Sunday celebration service less than satisfying when that is what we have been taught and striving for for years? What does it mean to be an organic church just doing life together and still have structure? Do we need structure? I appreciated Dr. Bolger’s personal account of discovering this with the Vineyard church plant and returning to the home church for healing and support. These are questions to ponder and explore.
